Analysis of Flexural and Torsional Strength of Reinforced Concrete Beam Made With Foundry Sand

Narendra R. Kalbhor, Nagesh Shelke

Abstract

Last few years the growth of construction industry is increasing rapidly due to increase in population. Concrete is a major constituent in all the construction activities. Concrete comprises of cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate and water. Many researchers have researched to find best alternative for the natural resources which are used in concrete. Foundry sand is one of them. In this article natural sand is replaced with Aluminum foundry sand. Foundry sand is nothing but the by-product of metal casting foundry industry.   In this experimental research the torsional strength and flexural strength at 7, 28 and 56 days of concrete are found out by replacing fine aggregate with foundry sand. The replacement is done in various percentages from 10%, 20% and 30% by weight of fine aggregate. The ultimate flexural strength on 20% replacement of fine aggregate is observed to be maximum for aluminium foundry sand.  It is possible to use waste foundry sand in construction up to certain limits under certain condition to increase both flexural and torsional strength of concrete.
